Advancing the Arts in South Dakota
through Service, Education and Advocacy
WHAT ARE WE?
South Dakotans for the Arts is a non-profit, non-partisan corporation whose
primary purpose is to advance the arts in South Dakota through service,
education and advocacy.
We assure that the arts always have a voice by
initiating communication and programs between citizens, elected officials and
policy-makers. We provide technical assistance to arts organizations,
strengthening their administrative skills and abilities to serve as effective
partners in their communities.
WHO ARE WE?
The Partnership: South Dakotans for the Arts (SoDA)
South Dakota Alliance for Arts Education (SDAAE)
Community Arts Network of South Dakota (CAN)
These three statewide organizations share programs, members, offices and staff.
The Partnership formed in 1990, and was initiated by South Dakotans for the
Arts, which serves as fiscal agent for programs and memberships.
The Membership:
South Dakotans for the Arts consists of
individuals, businesses and organizations concerned with improving the quality
of our lives through the arts and assuring quality arts education for our
children. Memberships support a united statewide effort to provide service,
education and advocacy of the arts through the Partnership to all South
Dakotans.
WHAT DO WE BELIEVE?
We believe:

the arts are an intrinsic part of the well
being of our communities.
-
arts education stimulates creativity,
communications and learning.

arts education is an essential tool for
reaching youth at risk.
-
the arts play an important role in tourism and
economic development.
-
artists need an environment which nurtures and
sustains their work.
We seek the support and endorsement of individuals, businesses and government.
WHAT DO WE DO?
South Dakotans for the Arts initiates, coordinates and sponsors programs and
projects statewide to advance the arts through service, education and advocacy.
ADVOCACY AND PUBLIC AWARENESS
Our primary goal is to protect and increase state and national funding to
the South Dakota Arts Council, a state agency, which re-grants those funds to
communities, arts organizations, artists, arts educators and schools throughout

public awareness campaign emphasizing the value of the arts to individuals,
communities and our state. The Executive Director of South Dakotans for the Arts
is a registered lobbyist with the State Legislature and informs Legislators and
Executive branch officials on arts issues.
