2005 Living Indian Treasure Award The fifteenth annual Living Indian Treasure Award will be presented to Dawn Little Sky, a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe. Mrs. Little Sky has dedicated her life to the preservation and teaching of Lakota Arts. The South Dakota Living Indian Treasure Award is presented annually to an American Indian elder in recognition of contributions to Native American art forms. Past recipients include Emma Amiotte, Alice New Holy Blue Legs, Steve Charging Eagle, Matt and Nelly Two Bulls, Clarence Rockboy, Nellie Menard, Anna Firethunder, Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve, Mabel Greeley, Ella Irving, Bessie Trimble Cornelius, Calvin Jumping Bull, Ollie V. Napesni, and the 2003 winner, Geraldine Sherman.
CALL FOR NOMINATIONS (Deadline Dec. 1, 2006) THE 16th SOUTH DAKOTA LIVING INDIAN TREASURE AWARD The Native American way of life traditionally honors the elders of their culture. In 1990 a new award in the arts was established to recognize and continue this tradition. Sponsored by South Dakotans for the Arts, the award is presented annually and is known as THE SOUTH DAKOTA LIVING INDIAN TREASURE AWARD. Artists eligible for the award must be living South Dakota Native Americans and over the age of 55. Artists working in all art forms (including visual arts, music, dance, theatre, and literature) with a record of artistic accomplishment are eligible. Selection is based upon preservation of excellence in traditional Indian art forms, or for breaking new ground with innovative art that stems from traditional sources. The deadline for nominations is Friday, December 1, 2007. Nomination materials should include a brief personal history of the nominee, detailed information about the nominee's work (including samples and/or photographs where appropriate), and a brief summary of accomplishments. Individuals or organizations may submit nominations.
