The Native
American way of life traditionally honors the elders of their culture.
In 1990 a new award in the arts was established to recognize and
continue this tradition. Co-sponsored by Northern Plains Indian Art
Market and South Dakotans for the Arts, the award is presented
biennially at the SD Governor's Awards in the Arts and is known as the
South Dakota Living Indian Treasure Award.
Artists eligible
for the award must be living South Dakota Native Americans and over the
age of 55. Artists in all art forms (including visual arts, music,
dance, theatre, literature, story telling) with a record of artistic
accomplishment are eligible. Selection is based upon preservation of
excellence in traditional Indian art forms or for breaking new ground
with innovative art that stems from traditional sources.
The Governor's
Awards in the Arts will be presented at the Ramkota River Center in
Pierre on Wednesday, February 16, 2011. Recipients must be
present to accept the award. Nominations may be made by an organization
of an individual and must be postmarked no later than November 30,
2010. Employees and board members of South Dakotans for the Arts and
the South Dakota Arts Council are not eligible for these awards.
Materials
submitted should include one copy of this form, a brief personal
history of the nominee and a summary of accomplishments of the nominee
no more than three pages in length. Samples or representations of the
artist's work are encouraged. Up to five letters of support may be
submitted. No materials will be returned unless a stamped,
self-addressed envelope is included. The nomination must be signed by
the person making the nomination and postmarked before November 30,
2010.
