Community Arts Network of South Dakota (CAN)

WHAT ARE WE?

South Dakota's Community Arts Network is a statewide assembly to strengthen South Dakota arts development through local arts councils and arts organizations by fostering communication, training, advocacy, and partnerships.

WHAT DO WE DO?

  • Prairie Arts Management Institute  South Dakotans for the Arts and the South Dakota Arts Council sponsor a national training institute at Augustana College, Sioux Falls, for staff of mid-sized and small arts organizations. The Prairie Arts Management Institute features master teachers.  Funding is provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, and the co-sponsors of the Institute are the National Community Arts Network and Arts Midwest.
  • Technical Assistance Group  TAG provides affordable, on-site assistance to local arts groups in management, planning, organizational development, artistic programming, marketing and community issues. TAG is a peer assistance program; members are skilled and experienced SD arts administrators.
  • South Dakotans for the Arts Day  South Dakotans for the Arts Day at the legislature is held biennially, alternating years with the Governor's Awards in the Arts. South Dakotans for the Arts Day includes the popular Children's Capitol Art Exhibit along with performing artists in the Capitol Rotunda. This day heightens awareness and appreciation of the arts among legislators and other decision-makers.
  • Governor's Awards in the Arts  The Governor's Awards are sponsored biennially by South Dakotans for the Arts and the South Dakota Arts Council to recognize the State's finest artists and arts supporters. Recipients are honored at a prestigious banquet attended by legislators, cabinet members and arts patrons.                               ***The next Governor’s Awards in the Awards is scheduled for January 22, 2007 at the  Ramkota River Centre in Pierre. Nominations are due by November 15, 2007 at the SoDA office.
  • Newsletters & Educational Information  Members of South Dakotans for the Arts are informed of opportunities and issues by THE ARTS ALIVE newsletter, featuring information about the South Dakota Arts Council, artists, and local arts organizations. Members also receive Membership Updates and alerts, which include information concerning education and advocacy issues.
  • Community Arts Handbook  This guide for nonprofit arts organizations provides information on how to operate a successful nonprofit community arts organization. Information on planning, developing a strong board of directors and membership, fundraising, grant writing, programs, marketing, advocacy and more is provided in a workbook format. The Community Arts Handbook is published by South Dakotans for the Arts with support from the South Dakota Arts Council and the South Dakota Community Foundation.

The South Dakota Arts Alive website is a joint effort of the South Dakota Arts Council and South Dakotans for the Arts. The organizations work together for the benefit of the arts in South Dakota.
