The Arts Education Institute (AEI) offers all K-12 educators Morning Courses
focusing on South Dakota State Standards and Curriculum Development and
Afternoon Workshops designed to give the classroom educator hands-on training
and ideas to implement into their classroom.
Master Classes & Teachers
Each participant is required to take ONE morning course (Monday-Friday, 9
am-noon), ONE Afternoon Workshop (Monday-Thursday, 1 pm-5 pm) and attend the
"Show & Tell" Social Thursday Evening 5:30-7:30 pm.
We have assembled an Oscar Winning cast of instructors that excel in both the
Arts and Education. They are creative, innovative and experienced in working as
artists and as classroom teachers and will bring their knowledge and expertise

Morning Courses (choose ONE)
9:00 a.m.-Noon, Monday through Friday
1. Art through Math, Math through Art, EDU 652 Dick Termes & Dr. Ben Sayler
Time will be spent going through many approaches to find art. Many of the
lessons will grow from two and three dimensional geometry's or substructures
and will work their way into possible realistic drawings or paintings. We will
explore the many relationships between the Art Mind and the Math Mind.
2. Literature Exploration through Puppetry, EDU 652 Markie Scholz & Dr.
Joanna Jones
This course will investigate puppetry opportunities in children's
literature. Participants will apply the Six Traits of Writing to develop
puppet characters and script writing as teaching tools. Daily events will
include: puppet script writing, puppet character development, concept
refinement and story presentation.
3. Keeping Your Balance-Integration in the Music Classroom, EDU 652 Christine
Leichtnam
Students will experience ways to develop instruction that lead to
integration and excellence in the music classroom. Music teachers will learn
what NCLB means for them and explore how to integrate with integrity.
4. Art & Content for Grades 6-12, EDU 652 Connie Herring
Hands-on sculpture projects will be used to focus on South Dakota content
standards, curriculum development, student assessment and presentation of
student exhibitions.
5. Teaching Art in K-8 Level, EDU 652 Fatih Benzer, Asst. Prof, SDSU
This course prepares the classroom teachers and art specialists to teach
art through the research, development and presentation of curricula
appropriate to grades K-8. The course involves study of the history, theory
and philosophy of art education, skill levels, aesthetic needs and creative
development of K-8 level students. Topics to be covered will include basic
understanding of SD content standards in visual arts and development of
activities to support curriculum goals.
6. Arts for Special Education, EDU 652 John V. Nelson
Standards & Curriculum work will focus on the arts and special education
with hands-on activities and collaboration. Teachers will gain valuable
experience and will improve arts-integrated teaching and learning through
Multiple-Intelligence Theory.
Afternoon Workshops (choose ONE)
1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday
1. World Music Drumming-Level 1, MUS 592 Gloria Brandt Harrison
You will learn drumming techniques, sing lots of great songs with
accompaniments and movement, connect African and Latin American cultural
traditions to the music performed and discover how music can be the perfect
vehicle for teaching team building, respect, focusing, listening, problem
solving and other important life skills including your own wellness, health
and music therapy.
2. Topics in Art-Oil Painting on Location, ART 592 Gary Steinley
FULL; no registrations accepted
This workshop is for those who have limited or no experience with oil
painting and/or painting landscapes. The first day will be spent in the studio
practicing fundamentals, the rest of the week outdoors experiencing and
painting Black Hills scenery. The emphasis is not on classroom applications,
but developing one's skills and enjoying painting on location.
3. Surface Design, ART 592 Lynn Verschoor, SD Art Museum
Students will create beautiful fabric pieces using a variety of surface
design techniques including dyeing, printing, painting and bead and embroidery
embellishment.
4. Organizing your Artistic Intuition, ART 592 Dick Termes
This workshop will introduce students to different approaches to
creativity. It will show how you can start with pure geometry and develop it
into realism or wonderful designs. We will spend time developing some
wonderful finished products in art.
5. Exploring Puppetry & Storytelling, ART 592 Markie Scholz, Puppeteer
The session will explore puppetry and storytelling from creating puppets to
understanding character development to putting together a finished production.
6. Installation Art, ART 592 Connie Herring
Introduction to installation art for grades 6-12. The gallery at BHSU will
be transformed into an installation by participants. Each participant will
become familiar with installation art through examination and discussion of
contemporary and historical installation work. They will create a group
installation. Installation work is a dynamic project for the classroom, and
supplies students with a new, exciting means of expression.
7. Digital Processes & Printing, ART 592 Steve Babbitt
FULL; no registrations accepted
Learn basic digital printing techniques in photography for use at home or
in the classroom for grades 8-12. Some Photoshop experience is useful but not
necessary. Students will work in the Mac lab but techniques will be applicable
to any imaging program.
8. Songwriting with Students of all Ages, MUS 592 David Lee Brown
Students will learn to write on specific themes (non-violence, self-esteem
promoting), work on techniques for stimulating creativity & channeling
inappropriateness, leading the class, working in groups, dealing with problem
areas, acceptance of others and others' ideas and assessment.
9. Pottery for the Elementary Classroom, ART 592 Shawn Funk
An introductory ceramics class for all K-6 elementary teachers who would be
interested in developing the use of clay in their classroom. There will be an
overview of the materials, projects, safety, and classroom management in using
clay for a variety of elementary classroom projects.

Scholarships
The South Dakota Arts Council will award ALL SOUTH DAKOTA TEACHERS completing
the Institute $160.00 on Friday, June 25.
